I've then tried to pick from sites that offer animal photos that will be of interest to the casual user looking for cute puppy pictures as well as someone looking for stock photos of animals for use in graphic design...have fun!

PicturesOf.Net - These free animal pictures are available for free use in smaller sizes provided you give a link back. They are also available as royalty-free stock photography and art prints. You'll find most every type of animal photo here; dogs, cats, snakes, reptiles, horses, birds, koalas, and some incredible butterfly photos.

Acclaim Stock Photography - More fantastic animal photos in small sizes for web sites and larger sizes for print. All sorts of animal photos are to be found here.

Acclaim Posters - Great animal posters to hang on your wall...animal art prints, too.

Photos.com - This is a great place to go for low-cost, good quality photos if you use a lot of them.

CalPhotos: Animals - Part of Cal Berkeley's Digital Library Project, this site includes a detailed search form that allow you to specify the photographer or location as well as species or common name. Another nice feature is their collection of habitat photos - great for classroom projects.

ArtToday has a huge selection of high-quality animal art with over 1,500 photo results returned for the search term "animal". There are some good animal photos here but the real value with ArtToday is their offering of royalty-free, copyright-safe clipart. Much of it is in WMF or Postscript so it is resolution independent...really good stuff!

AnimalPics - This animal photos site is out of Spain, but translates to English...um, well the photos are nice...but the site itself is pretty slow, I'm not sure, but it might have something to do with the loads of ads. I couldn't find any terms of usage, so you're on your own with this one.

Lucid Images - Not only do these people provide stunning wildlife Photos, but they also give lots of tips on how you can take and digitally process your own. They have galleries featuring North American birds, mammals, scenes, and Alaska specifically...they have free screensavers. Check out their Feature Creature and learn something!
